Information for Trainees and Volunteers

Here you will find useful information about your potential placement!

Counselling services at Stepping Stones are currently offered by professional, trainee and volunteer counsellors. Stepping Stones has developed a good working relationship with several counselling qualification providers over several years. These currently include;

  • Centre of Therapy (Diploma in Counselling and Groupwork),
  • Persona Counselling (Post Graduate Diploma/MSc in Psychological Wellbeing, Counselling and Psychotherapy),
  • University of Strathclyde (MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy),
  • Glasgow Caledonian University (D.Psych in Counselling Psychology),
  • Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre (Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).

Currently Stepping Stones requires trainees to be studying on a course that is a Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level 10 or above.

After successful interview, trainees and volunteers are expected to stay with Stepping Stones for a minimum of 6 months, carrying a minimum of 2, and a maximum of 4 hours a week with members. Each successful applicant is required to be a member of the PVG scheme and self fund updates as and when they are required. A PVG number is required from all trainees and volunteers prior to the  commencement of a placement at Stepping Stones.

Volunteer counsellors are typically fully qualified counsellors looking for a volunteering opportunity to continue to develop their experience delivering therapy, and in some cases aid towards being awarded accreditation with a governing body, such as BACP, or BABCP. Volunteers will be reimbursed for costs associated with their volunteering role, such as travelling, and relevant supervision.

Both trainee and volunteer counsellors can look forward to working in a busy, adapting service, which is well established within the local community. Stepping Stones aims to provide an environment which uses humanistic values to interact with our members and staff alike, facilitating learning, growth, support, and positive outcomes.
